NAIRN - A GREAT BASE IN THE HIGHLANDS AND THE INVERNAIRNE - YOUR BEST BASE IN NAIRN WITH GREAT SEAVIEWS!

Set in one and a half acres of gardens overlooking the Moray Firth with a private path that leads down to the promenade and sandy beaches, the Invernairne is perfectly situated as a base while visiting the Highlands of Scotland.

We are Members of the Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board

NOTE: The Invernairne was a Hotel from 1948 until Spring 2004.  From that date we decided to change our status to 'Guest House' - the only difference in service or facilities being that we ceased offering evening meals.  There are numerous restaurants in Nairn and we will be happy to advise on these. We will of course continue to offer an excellent Full Breakfast and our lounge bar is still open 12 noon-early evenings throughout the Season (non-smoking).

WHY NAIRN?

Nairn has been a spa holiday town for well over a hundred years with beautiful beaches and even its own "micro-climate", said to be even sunnier and warmer than places just a few miles away, such as Inverness; visit Nairn's harbour and view its yachts or take a boat trip offshore from Inverness to see the only place in Scotland with a resident dolphin population. Nairn really is the perfect base for touring the Highlands and boasts 2 championship golf courses (Nairn and Nairn Dunbar) and another 20 within easy reach including a great new golf £70 million course just 10 miles away at Castle Stuart opened in July 2009 constructed on land that was bequeathed by Mary Queen of Scots to her half-brother the first Earl of Moray; historic Castles such as Cawdor and Brodie are very close as is the battlefield of Culloden (about 6 miles away); wildlife abounds and the area also offers:

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE INVERNAIRNE

Built in 1878-1880 by Dr Grigor, the gentleman who developed Nairn into a spa holiday resort, the Invernairne was designed as an Italian mansion and originally named "Castellamare" (Castle on the sea) - it featured balustrades, decorative ceilings and an Italian sunken garden.  Many of the original features exist today.

Lovely Gardens and Seaviews

Dr Grigor let the mansion out as a luxury "self-catering" holiday home and the first occupants were the Earl and Countess of Aberdeen who spent some 2 months here in the Summer of 1880 while their stately home was being renovated.  The Earl was to become Governor General of Canada 1893-1898; then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Their idea of "self-catering" in those Victorian days was to bring their servants with them!  Before World War 2 there were 16 servants including 2 gardeners at the Invernairne. No wonder Kay and I are tired by bed-time!

It is believed that the house was rented by Lord Thurlow (Paymaster General of Great Britain) while Firthside House was being built next door.  On completion, it is said that Lady Thurlow preferred the Invernairne to Firthside House.

Another Lord, Alfred Tristram Lawrence, 1st Baron Trevethin (1843-1936) owned the grand house for 40 years (1889 -1929). He rose to become Lord Chief Justice of England. The vault he had made for his important papers still exists in the basement, but now only holds the beer barrels and not the secrets of state.  One of his sons who would have lived here became Geoffrey Lawrence, 3rd Baron Trevethin and 1st Baron Oaksey, DSO, KC (1880-1971) was the main British Judge during the Nuremberg Trials after World War 2, and President of the Judicial group. His son became Lord Oaksey, champion amateur jockey and later the very well-known television horse racing presenter on Channel 4.

Mrs Gordon and her daughter, Nancy, owned the Invernairne from 1929 - 1948.  Mrs Gordon moved here from the stately Aikenhead House near Glasgow, when her husband died, bringing much of the wood panelling you see at the Invernairne from there. We have recently had some wonderful memories of that period related to us by Graham Clements who came to live here as a schoolboy (1941-45) with his mother who was the cook, while his father was in the Army stationed nearby.  Next door lived the Whitelaw's (Willie Whitelaw became deputy Prime Minister under Mrs Thatcher) and very kindly Mrs Whitelaw often used to run young Graham to school.

The Invernairne became a hotel in 1948. It has been popular with visitors & locals alike since that time. Douglas and Kay Mitchell and staff look forward to welcoming you to the Invernairne for a holiday in this most beautiful part of Scotland. Doug's grandparents came from Stonehaven near Aberdeen. Kay has ancestors from various parts of Europe (even Viking blood we believe!). Kay speaks fluent Italian and has knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL).

THE BREAKFAST ROOM

The superbly appointed breakfast room overlooks the Moray Firth. There are many local restaurants for evening meals - we are happy to advise and make reservations for you if required.

The bar (12 noon - 8pm and non-smoking following Scottish regulations) offers a fine range of fine malts and whiskies and bottled beers.
